S&T Project SNOW-7 Final Report: Assessing the Utility of New Satellites to Advance State-of-the-Art Snow-Forecasting Capabilities Report

The Bureau of Reclamation has partnered with the University of New Mexico, University of Washington, and University of Wyoming to analyze how remote-sensing products, such as Sentinel-1 and stereo satellite imagery, can improve the spatial and temporal resolution of snow-water-equivalent (SWE) measurements in the headwaters of the San Juan – Chama Project. The goal for this project is to scale this data and workflow so that it can be used more broadly to inform Reclamation’s water managers at an agency level. This report covers Year 1 of this project, which has promising results to date. This report serves as a transmittal document for two technical reports from the University of Wyoming and the University of New Mexico, and the University of Washington on their work in this pursuit. This project is further funded for Years 2-4 under Reclamation’s Science and Technology Program. A final report for this project in its entirety is expected in late 2025.
