Experimental and observational data on sediment nutrient dynamics in the Maumee River mouth and surrounding nearshore areas (2022 and 2024)

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: August 01, 2026 at 06:15 AM | Dataset Last Updated: July 09, 2026 at 12:00 AM
This data release includes 1) results from intact sediment core experiments to measure nutrient release and uptake from sediments in the Maumee River mouth and adjacent nearshore areas. 2) physical and chemical properties of sediments sampled at the same sites where sediments were collected for intact core experiments, plus additional sites in the area. 3) Results of water column incubation experiments to measured transformation of inorganic dissolved nutrients in the water column of the Maumee River mouth. Nutrients, in all these cases, refers to nitrogen and phosphorus. Intact core experiments and water column incubation experiments targeted changes in inorganic nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) and soluble reactive phosphorus. Core experiments were conducted in oxic and anoxic conditions. Sediment properties such as elemental composition (nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon content), particle size distribution and bulk density (among others) were measured on sediment used in the incubation experiments, all the adjacent sites. These sediment properties, if they relate strongly to sediment nutrient flux, can be used to estimate sediment nutrient flux in locations that were not measured directly.
