Experimental 13C and 14C measurements of net primary production and calcification rates in laboratory cultures and field incubations collected from 2022-07-15 to 2025-03-28 (NCEI Accession 0315806)

This dataset contains laboratory culture and field-based measurements of phytoplankton net primary production (NPP) and particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) production derived from stable isotope (13C) and radioisotope (14C) tracer incubations. Laboratory experiments were conducted using cultures of the diatom Chaetoceros tenuissimus and the coccolithophore Gephyrocapsa huxleyi under controlled conditions with incubation durations of 8 and 24 hours. Calcification measurements are included for G. huxleyi, with experiments spanning a range of cell concentrations (10^3 – 10^5cells mL⁻¹), while diatom experiments were conducted at a fixed concentration (10^5 cells mL^-1). Field observations were collected as part of in situ incubation experiments conducted at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site, including depth-resolved measurements of NPP and calcification. Laboratory and field datasets include particulate organic carbon production rates, particulate inorganic carbon production rates, tracer incorporation values, cell-normalized production rates, incubation durations, and associated experimental metadata. All measurements were generated using parallel 13C and 14C tracer incubation approaches, enabling paired estimates of carbon fixation pathways under laboratory and in situ conditions. The dataset supports evaluation of isotope-based tracer methods and provides vertically resolved estimates of phytoplankton productivity and calcification in oligotrophic marine environments using production arrays.
