Airborne Magnetic and Radiometric Survey over parts of central and northern Florida and southeastern Georgia, 2023-2024

Metadata Updated: September 14, 2025

This data release provides digital flight-line and gridded data for a high-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over parts of central and northeastern Florida and southeastern Georgia. The survey was acquired as part of the UGSS Earth Mapping Resource Initiative (Earth MRI) to improve our understanding of the fundamental geologic framework of the region with applications to evaluating natural resources and geologic hazards. The survey area is located within the Atlantic Coastal Plain province of Florida and Georgia. This region hosts heavy mineral sands deposits prospective for Ti, Zr, and REE, and phosphate deposits. Data for this survey were acquired and processed by Xcalibur Smart Mapping under contract to Fugro and the USGS. The survey was flown from November 2023 to May 2024 using a fixed-wing airplane. Pre-planned flight lines were flown in an E-W direction with 250-m line spacing; N-S tie-lines were flown with 2500-m line spacing. The nominal flight height of 120 meters (m) above ground, with areas having higher population densities flown at a nominal height of 330 m above ground for safety reasons. The survey was flown in two discontinuous blocks, with a total of 94,172 km in a northern block and 27,010 in a southern block, for a total of 121,182 linear kilometers of data. Following acquisition, Xcalibur Smart Mapping also performed extensive post-processing of the data and delivered the final databases, grids, and images. Details regarding the flights and data processing are described in the contractor report provided in this release. Raw data in a csv format and geotiff images of the data can be downloaded directly from the two corresponding Child Item links on this page. The full contractor package contains numeric grids, shape files, geotiffs, and databases can be downloaded from this landing page. The contractor data are in both open-source ascii formats and Oasis Montaj formats (.grd and .gdb), which can be read using the free Geosoft Viewer, available for download from https://www.seequent.com/products-solutions/geosoft-viewer/. Note these binary .grd and .gdb files are not ESRI format files.
