WRST Sheep and Goat Count Units

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: March 03, 2026 at 06:35 AM | Dataset Last Updated: January 01, 2005 at 12:00 AM
Aerial survey units for surveys of Dall's sheep and mountain goats in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The count areas were originally delineated by Alaska Department of Fish and Game wildlife biologists in 1967 on several USGS 1:250,000 topographical maps to survey (count and classify) Dall sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) and mountain goat (Oreamnos americana) populations. Count areas were designed to cover the mountainous habitat of these animals within WRST and to encompass units of reasonable size for fixed-wing aerial surveys (4-6 hours of effort) using prominent geographical features for boundaries. These units are currently flown in cooperative effort between Alaska Department of Fish and Game and Park biologist. The units were not intended to define discrete populations of sheep or goats.
