Whooping Crane Migration through North Dakota and South Dakota

Metadata Updated: June 8, 2024

The whooping crane is a federally endangered species that the bulk of the world population winters at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge down in Texas and typically nests in the Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada. The birds normally migrate through North Dakota and South Dakota both in the spring and the fall. This layer will provide probability estimates for important stopover locations that provide foraging areas in close proximity to roosting areas in North Dakota and South Dakota.
