Published by DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Catalog Last Checked: April 12, 2026 at 06:13 AM | Dataset Last Updated: July 01, 1957 at 12:00 AM
Collection consists of white-light (unfiltered), full-disk images of the sun provided by various solar observatories and institutions. White light pictures show how the Sun appears to the naked eye, when all the colors of the rainbow are collected by the camera. In a white light photo, the part of the Sun that we see is called the "photosphere". It has a temperature of about 6000 degrees Celsius, much cooler than the corona.
