WATER TEMPERATURE and other data from DISCOVERY, UNKNOWN PLATFORMS and other platforms from 1988-07-29 to 1991-07-26 (NCEI Accession 9200096)

Metadata Updated: May 1, 2025

The water depth and temperature data were collected from UK ships CHALLENGER, DISCOVERY, DARWIN, FLEETWOOD, LIMA, OCEAN WEATHER STATION, and UNKNOWN PLATFORMS between July, 1988 and July, 1991. The originator's bathythermograph (XBT) data containing 557 profiles were submitted on a tape by P. Horsburgh, Hydro Department, Birkenhead, UK. The data have been converted and are now available on line in C116 (XBT) file format of NODC.

The data type C116 contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. The XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m.
