Visible and Near Infrared (VNIR) and Short Wavelength Infrared (SWIR) Spectra of Select Altered Mafic and Ultramafic Rock Samples from the Josephine Peridotite in CA and OR, the Yukon-Tanana region in Alaska, and from the Southern Appalachians in VA, NC, SC, and GA

Metadata Updated: September 17, 2025

These data are laboratory reflectance measurements conducted on a suite of altered mafic and ultramafic rocks. Visible-Near InfraRed (VNIR) and Short-Wave InfraRed (SWIR) reflectance measurements were made (~0.4 – 2.5 microns) using an artificial light source connected to an Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) spectrometer. Spectra from a total of 91 samples were measured and analyzed, representing 33 samples collected from the Josephine Peridotite in the Klamath Mountains of northern California and Southern Oregon,12 samples from the Yukon-Tanana region of Alaska, and 46 samples from various ultramafic units in the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. For many samples, both fresh and weathered surfaces were measured. The data were obtained in support of developing alteration indices to guide critical mineral resource and carbon dioxide mineralization assessments.
