Vadose Zone Corvallis

Metadata Updated: June 6, 2022

This field study was designed to test different methods for measuring water and nutrient transport throughout the vadose zone. A pilot study was implemented to determine the feasibility of approach for comparing the impact of interseeding a cover crop into the sweet corn crop versus conventionally managing the sweet corn, without a cover crop. The field experiment was established in June 2016 with the uniform planting of a sweet corn crop across the whole ~2 ac site. In September 2016, monitoring networks were installed in two subfields, North and South, consisting of groundwater wells and vadose zone instrumentation installed near the center of each. Water was sampled every two weeks beginning in October 2016 and analyzed for a suite of nutrients and stable isotopes. We present four years of such nutrient data, along with post-harvest soil data, collected each September after plant harvest. Thus, the data reported herein comes from different measurement methods (monitoring wells, vadose zone lysimeters, post-harvest soil tests) that can be utilized when trying to understand hydrologic nitrate transport in the vadose zone and groundwater.
