Upper Waiākea Forest Reserve, Island of Hawai'i, Fluorescence-screening of Culex quinquefasciatus Captured During MRR Trial, October-December 2020

This metadata is part of a larger Mark-Release-Recapture (MRR) study of adult Culex quinquefasciatus conducted in a montane rainforest in Upper Waiākea Forest Reserve on the Island of Hawai'i. The dataset consists of a list of all Culex quinquefasciatus captured during the Recapture phase of the trial, following two consecutive releases of marked mosquitoes. Cohorts of both wild captured mosquitoes marked with fluorescent pigments and lab-reared, rhodamine B marked mosquitoes were released together on the evening of November 16, 2020 but only lab-reared rhodamine B marked mosquitoes were released on the evening of November 21, 2020. We scored the degree of fluorescence from 0 to 3 using the wild caught mosquitoes prior to any releases as negative controls and lab marked mosquitoes as positive controls. Mosquitoes with a score of 2 were considered rhodamine-B marked while individuals with scores of 3 were clearly marked with fluorescent pigments. Data also includes the location of the trap in relation to the release point and the type of trap. Some data was censored prior to analysis due to concerns of the validity of the rhodamine-B mark in gravid mosquitoes. While some males were captured none were marked. These data were used to make some of the first density and survivorship estimate for mosquitoes in Hawai'i.
