Upper Midwest Water Science Center Chloride Concentration Surrogate Models

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: September 10, 2026 at 09:22 PM | Dataset Last Updated: February 27, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Linear regression models were developed using specific conductance to estimate chloride concentrations at stream and storm sewer sites monitored by the Upper Midwest Water Science Center (UMidWSC) for UMidWSC stakeholders. Methods for model development, application, and maintenance are described in Standard Operating Procedures for Computing Chloride Concentrations and Loads at Sites Operated by the U.S. Geological Survey Upper Midwest Water Science Center (available upon request). Linear regression models were computed using open-source statistical software (R Studio) and documented using R code based off an original script developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Kansas Water Science Center, Patrick Eslick-Huff, August 2020. Child items will be added to this data release as regression models are published at UMidWSC sites to estimate chloride concentrations. Child items include input files (.csv, comma-separated), source code (.zip, compressed file), and model output/verification files (HTML format). Values presented in the HTML files are rounded to three significant figures. This data release contains the following child items: 1) Surrogate Regression Model for Computation of Chloride Concentrations at Station 05427965 Spring Harbor Storm Sewer at Madison, Wisconsin (2014-2024).
