UAV imagery and digital elevation data for the debris slide in Chaos Canyon, 28 June 2022, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, U.S. Geological Survey Data Release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9ZQQY3G

Metadata Updated: December 11, 2025

This dataset contains a point cloud (HalletPeak_PointCloud.las), digital elevation model (HalletPeak_DEM.tif), and orthoimagery (HalletPeak_Ortho.tif) of a debris slide originating on the southeast flank of Hallett Peak and sliding into Upper Chaos Canyon in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA. The slide occurred on 28 June 2022, and imagery was obtained on 15 July 2022. These products were created from 692 georeferenced photos, included with this data release as UAV_photos_video, taken from a USGS-approved DJI Mavic Pro uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV). The photos were converted to a point cloud using the structure from motion (SfM) algorithms in Agisoft Metashape (v. 1.8.3). This debris slide is within a remote area of Rocky Mountain National Park and it was not possible to add local ground control, therefore the point cloud was initially roughly aligned using the onboard GPS unit of the UAV. The orthoimagery is aligned horizontally, and no subsequent alignment was conducted. The SfM point cloud alignment was performed using an iterative closest point (ICP) approach along with point-pair picking with the most recent 3DEP lidar digital elevation model (DEM), which had 1-m resolution.
