U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) AVHRR-based Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature (MCSST)

The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) produces the AVHRR-based MCSST (Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature) for operational oceanographic analyses and forecasts. This product provides real-time AVHRR global area coverage SST daily retrievals from NOAA-19 GAC and LAC, and GAC and FRAC from MetOp-A, MetOp-B, and MetOp-C. Further binning and averaging of the pixel-level data results in a final data spatial resolution of 8.8 km. In 2015, NCEI began using the MCSST from NAVOCEANO as an input SST dataset for producing the operational Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) Analysis. Prior to 2015, NCEI used the MCSST from NESDIS for OISST before NESDIS stopped distributing MCSST in November 2015. Data from NOAA-19, MetOp-A, and MetOp-B have been used since 2015. Data from NOAA-19 stopped in January 2021, and data from MetOp-C began in October 2021. The MCSST from NAVOCEANO is used for operational OISST production at NCEI. The archived data are operational data going forward with no historical backlog. The data are in a binary “tmp” file format. A netCDF version of this MCSST dataset is included in the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) Program.
