Transient electromagnetic soundings in the Illinois River Basin in support of the USGS Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS)

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: October 11, 2026 at 04:45 AM | Dataset Last Updated: October 08, 2026 at 12:00 AM
In August 2023, transient electromagnetic (TEM) data, also referred to as time domain electromagnetic (TDEM) surveys, were acquired at 2 locations near Hanna Township, Indiana as part of a training course in the use of near-surface geophysics to characterize subsurface structures in support of a U.S. Geological Survey groundwater investigation. The first site was located near the western bank of the Kankakee River and the second site was located near the eastern bank of the Kankakee River within the Turkey Foot Wetlands Management Area. TEM data were collected at the first site near the western bank of the Kankakee River using a ABEM WalkTEM 2 unit (acquisition software V 1.3.7.4) using a single-turn transmitter loop (Tx) size of 40 by 40 meters square, a center-loop receiver (Rx) that is 0.5 by 0.5 square meters in size (with an effective area of 5 m^2), and dual currents of about 1.0 and 7.25 amperes (A). In addition, a second center-loop receiver, 10 by 10 meters square in size (with an effective area of 200 m^2) was used. Both receivers were centered and concentrically nested inside the Tx loop. The transmitter measurement cycles were stacked 10 times. This data release includes the raw TEM data. TEM data were collected at the second site near the eastern bank of the Kankakee River using the same data collection parameters as at the first site although the 0.5 by 0.5 square meter receiver coil was not used because it was no longer working after completing data collection at the first site. This data release includes the raw TEM data.
