Toxicity of a Pyrethrum Pesticide to Invasive Crayfish
This study aimed to assess the toxicity of a commercially available pyrethrum pesticide to virile crayfish (Faxonius virilis, Hagen 1870), which were exposed for 24-h intervals during 96-h tests at two different temperatures. Adult virile crayfish were used in trials as proxy for red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii, Girard 1852) to represent a conservative estimate of potency of pyrethrum to red swamp crayfish. Four sets of ten crayfish (n = 10 crayfish x 4 = 40 crayfish) were exposed to 200 parts per billion (ppb) of pyrethrum in static exposure tanks for four sequential 24-h intervals during 96-h tests. Crayfish mortality and behavior were observed at 24-h and biometric measurements (carapace length, wet weight) were collected post 24-h exposure period. Datasets include water chemistry, biometric, and chemical analysis data.
