SVSim Version 1.0: Model Files
The Sacramento Valley Groundwater-Surface Water Simulation Model (SVSim) Version 1.0 is a calibrated numerical model that simulates water movement through the land surface and the surface water and groundwater flow systems in California’s Sacramento Valley using the DWR-developed software Integrated Water Flow Model Version 2015 (IWFM-2015). SVSim has a finite element grid with over 23,000 elements. Model input data are spatially and temporally distributed, based on available data. The model elements are grouped into nine (9) water budget subregions for estimating regional water budgets. SVSim contains monthly historical stream inflows, surface water diversions, precipitation, evapotranspiration, and land-use acreages from October 1973 through September 2015. (Data are available for 1922 through 2015 for some input files.) SVSim dynamically calculates crop water demands, allocates contributions from precipitation, soil moisture and surface water diversions, and calculates the groundwater pumping required to meet the remaining demand. It simulates the historical response of the Sacramento Valley’s groundwater and surface water flow system to historical stresses and can also be used to simulate the response to projected stresses. The model has a typical run-time of approximately 3 hours.
SVSim model files are provided in a compressed zip format due to the number and size of the files (7 GB uncompressed). The contents of the zip file include the model executables, model input files, and selected outputs from running the model and calculating zbudgets. The input files and parameter files are all in text format. Outputs are in text files and summaries have been developed and are contained in Excel files. For a description of the model files and how to run the model, see SVSim Version 1.0: Roadmap to Running SVSim.
