San Francisco Street Tree Inventory
Note 9/9/2026: This dataset was updated in place to correct outstanding data issues, following our migration to a new asset management system in December 2024. You can access the previous version of the dataset here.
A. SUMMARY
This dataset contains all street trees recorded in the City’s street tree inventory. Each row represents a single street tree. The dataset is filtered from a broader asset inventory and includes only assets designated specifically as trees (excluding empty basins, landscaping areas, and potential planting sites). It does not include Street Trees that have been removed. You can find most trees that have been removed in the Street Tree Removal Notifications dataset.
B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED
The dataset is extracted from the Public Works asset management system (CMMS) and filtered to include only assets classified as street trees. Non‑tree assets such as empty basins, landscaping areas, and potential planting sites are excluded to ensure each record represents a single street tree.
C. UPDATE PROCESS
The dataset is updated on a daily basis by automatically extracting the latest street tree records from the Public Works asset management system.
D. HOW TO USE THIS DATASET
Not all street trees in the dataset have coordinates; for records that do include coordinates, the precision may vary, so users should review spatial accuracy before performing location‑based analysis. Tree information is updated as part of normal operational workflows: typically when inspectors or field staff interact with a tree for maintenance, inspection, or other actions. As a result, while the dataset is refreshed on a scheduled basis, individual tree records may not always reflect the most current conditions.
Please note that trees removed on an emergency basis (e.g. storm or life hazard) may not appear in this dataset or in the Street Trees Removal Notifications dataset. The Street Trees Removal Notifications dataset is only for the formal removal process where a tree removal permit is issued and the tree was recommended for removal.
