Published by DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI > National Centers for Environmental Information, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Catalog Last Checked: April 12, 2026 at 09:14 PM | Dataset Last Updated: January 01, 1998 at 12:00 AM
The State of the Climate is a collection of periodic summaries recapping climate-related occurrences on both a global and national scale. The State of the Climate Monthly Overview - Synoptic Discussion describes recent weather events and climate anomalies in the United States in relation to the phenomena that cause the weather. These phenomena include the jet stream, fronts and low pressure systems that bring precipitation, high pressure systems that bring dry weather, and the mechanisms which control these features - such as El Niño, La Niña, and other oceanic and atmospheric drivers (Pacific/North American pattern, North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, and others). The report may contain more technical language than other components of the State of the Climate series. Monthly reports are available beginning with July 2011.
