This data release contains rasters of modeled spawning habitat for spring Chinook salmon at a range of streamflows in the South Fork McKenzie River from downstream of Cougar Dam to the confluence with the McKenzie River and in the McKenzie River, extending downstream to a point near Walterville, Oregon. This area approximately encompasses the main river extent where spring Chinook salmon spawn in the South Fork McKenzie River and McKenzie River downstream of Cougar Dam (Stockwell and others, 2025). Usable habitat area for spawning spring Chinook salmon was evaluated by integrating depth and velocity outputs from two-dimensional hydraulic models (Bartelt and White, 2026) and estimates of riverbed grainsize (Bartelt and others, 2026) with observed and literature-based Chinook salmon habitat preferences (White and others, 2026). Grainsize estimates include the D50 (median surficial sediment size) and D84 (84th percentile surficial sediment size), which are used to characterize the proportion of the riverbed where substrate particles are of a sufficient size for building nests (redds) and movable by spawning Chinook salmon (White and others, 2026). The resulting rasters of modeled spawning habitat for the South Fork McKenzie River and McKenzie River are organized into three subreaches (described in enclosed README file). For each reach, rasters of spawning habitat are included for a range of streamflows that span typical streamflows during the spring Chinook salmon spawning period of mid-August to late-October. Users are encouraged to read White and others (2026) and the enclosed README file for descriptions of model development, habitat preference criteria selection, and limitations.
