Soil core data from a restored reach of Underwood Creek, Wisconsin, 2019
A total of 77 soil cores were collected from a restored reach of Underwood Creek floodplain (Wauwatosa, WI) during July and August 2019 to assess the distribution of sediments at the floodplain surface and shallow subsurface across the reach. Soil cores were collected from sites in a grid-like network across the reach using an Oakfield Model L Tube Sampler Soil Probe. Samplers were advanced by hand with use of a rubber mallet to overcome moderate resistance. Cores were closed at the depth of manual refusal. Soil properties with depth, water presence, surficial deposits, surficial vegetation, and GPS coordinates were recorded with each core. Surficial soils (soil types in the top 30 cm of each core) at each location were classified as one of three general categories – sandy, loamy, and clayey – depending on the predominant texture. Surficial soil classes were mapped to polygons based on point classifications.
