Shenandoah National Park FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data
Fire effects monitoring data collected at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Data were collected during spring, summer, and fall field seasons from 2001 to 2025 by the R1 Fire Effects Monitoring Crew base out of Shenandoah National Park. Data include Composite Burn Index (CBI) plots (2002-2017) and Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH) plots (2001-2025). Data collected from CBI plots include numerical severity rankings of fire effects upon overstory trees, intermediate trees, subcanopy, shrubs, herbs, fuels, and substrates. Photographs were taken from plot perimeter toward plot center to document fire effects. Data collected from 50 x 20 m forest plots include tree inventory to obtain density and basal area, fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass, seedling density, as well as 50-m point intercept transects. Data collected from 30-m point-intercept transects include vegetation percent cover and height. Photographs are taken at each plot during each monitoring event.
