This cruise will continue CIOERT, NOAA, and FGBNMS objectives in the NW Gulf of Mexico (GOM) to characterize morphological, physiological, and molecular differences between shallow and mesophotic corals. Through sampling of the target species Montastraea cavernosa, this project will assess ecological connectivity, both locally and regionally, through evaluation of genomic molecular markers. These efforts will also address the efficacy of the deep reef refugia hypothesis (Glynn 1996), which posits that deep and mesophotic reefs less impacted by thermal and anthropogenic stressors can be sources of larvae to help repopulate degraded shallow coral reefs. The objectives will also include a reciprocal transplant experiment to track coral responses to changing environmental conditions over the next several years.
