Resilient DC & Climate Ready DC Progress Update

Metadata Updated: December 31, 2025

As we gather more insights into how climate change is already affecting the District and revisit the scientific projections for the future, we’re getting smarter about how to confront this new normal.  DOEE and HSEMA are partnering to revise the initiatives in Climate Ready DC and Resilient DC's Climate Action Chapter to ensure all people who live, work, and play in the District can thrive in the face of change.Resilient DC is the District's plan to strengthen our collective capacity to thrive in the face of change. It is made up of 4 goals:Inclusive Growth: envisions a DC where all residents benefit from continued economic and population growth. Initiatives leverage growth and reduce inequality. Climate Action: envisions a DC that is prepared for the impacts of climate change. Initiatives uphold commitments of the  Paris climate agreement.  Smarter DC: envisions a DC that embraces advancements in technology and reduces negative consequences. Initiatives support a technology-enabled city. Safe and Healthy Washingtonians: envisions a DC where every neighborhood is safe and residents are strong and healthy. Initiatives build individual resilience by addressing disparities in health and reducing crime.Climate Ready DC is the District's plan to adapt to a changing climate. It is made up of 4 chapters:Transportation and Utilities: The goal is to improve transportation and utility infrastructure to maintain viability during periods of extreme heat, severe weather, and flooding. Buildings and Development: the goal is to retrofit existing buildings and design new buildings and development projects to withstand climate change impacts. Neighborhoods and Communities: the goal is to make neighborhoods and communities safer and more prepared by strengthening community, social, and economic resilience. Governance and Implementation: the goal is to establish policies, structures, and monitoring and evaluation procedures to ensure successful implementation of Climate Ready DC.
