Relative Abundance and Diversity of Spiders in a Recently Disturbed (burn site) area.

Metadata Updated: December 13, 2025

"PI conducted a study of the relative abundance and diversity of spiders in a recently burned area, under the supervision of Dr. Susan Riechert. From 1999-2002 approximately 809 spider specimens were collected at a burn site near the Top of the World in the park. The PI was able to identify 53 species and numerous samples only to higher taxa. The four different techniques used to acquire the specimens: collecting below knee level, collecting above knee level, using a beat stick and sheet, and leaf litter sifting. Black widow data analysis revealed that in the three collection trips taken from 2000-2002, black widow captures decreased from 15 to 10 to 1, respectively. In 2005, all specimens were reported identified to the level of the PI's ability and records were to be entered into the ATBI database, analyzed, and a final report returned to the park with specimens and data."
