Shipboard data and data products collected from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities (MDBC) Restoration Projects

This dataset collection contains raw shipboard data collected during seagoing expeditions conducted by the Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities (MDBC) restoration projects (hereafter MDBC projects). The collection also contains processed data products derived from those shipboard data collections, along with associated metadata. The MDBC projects are funded by the Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group (OOTIG) to compensate (and mitigate) for injuries to natural resources from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. The goals of the MDBC projects are to improve understanding of mesophotic and deep benthic invertebrates and fish, to inform management and ensure resiliency, restore abundance and biomass for injured species, and actively manage MDBC to protect against multiple threats and provide a framework for monitoring, education, and outreach. There are four MDBC projects: Mapping, Ground-truthing, and Predictive Habitat Modeling (MGM), Habitat Assessment and Evaluation (HAE), Coral Propagation Technique Development (CPT), and Active Management and Protection (AMP). This dataset collection includes biological samples, still images and video, oceanographic surveys, geophysical information (like multibeam echosounder and side scan sonar data) as well as navigational data from ships, ROVs, and AUVs, in addition to multimedia outputs. Processed data and analyzed products that have been derived from raw data are also included, along with metadata information. This collection spans multiple years and vessels. It includes MDBC project data collected beginning in 2021, with NCEI Archive Management System (AMS) accessions (a unique identifier and record for specific datasets) organized by expedition year. Within an AMS accession, there are directories for individual expeditions. There may be multi-year expedition data products and data products to be archived as independent AMS accessions. Some AMS accessions (archived data) preceded the MDBC projects, but provide useful context. These ‘legacy’ datasets were collected from 1980 to 2021 and sourced from federal and state agencies, as well as from academia and industry.
