Radiocarbon ages from sites in Peru generated during joint volcano hazards projects carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Disaster Assistance Program, Instituto Geofisico del Peru, and Instituto Geologico, Minero y Metalurgico del Peru
We present the results of 14C age analysis of samples collected during multiple projects that are part of an ongoing, joint initiative of the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Disaster Assistance Program with the Instituto Geológico Minero y Metalúrgico and Instituto Geofísico del Perú. These projects are part of a wider effort to better understand Peru’s many volcanoes and provide baseline data that can be applied to understanding the character of the country’s volcanism and assessing its volcanic hazards. Many of Peru’s late Pleistocene and Holocene eruptions and non-eruptive volcanic events lack critical information on when they occurred. The ages reported here were determined from samples collected from terrestrial outcrops, yareta (Azorella compacta), and peat cores of up to 6 m length. The data presented here help constrain the timing of many eruptions or non-eruptive lahars in Peru that were previously not dated. For each sample, we provide stratigraphic constraint and outcrop locations, but detailed tephrostratigraphy and interpretations for each project have been or will be presented in independent publications using these 14C age data.
