Pesticides in polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) for 97 Midwest U.S. streams, 2013.

Metadata Updated: July 6, 2024

In 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency characterized water-quality stressors and ecological conditions in 100 wadeable streams across the Midwestern United States. The goal of the study was to determine the relative effects of multiple ecological stressors – contaminants, nutrients, sediment, and habitat – on ecological communities in the streams. The Midwest is an intensely agricultural region where pesticides in streams pose risks to aquatic biota, but temporal variability in pesticide concentrations makes characterization of their exposure to organisms challenging. To compensate for the effects of temporal variability, we deployed polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) in 100 small streams across the region for about 5 weeks (mean of 37±7 days) during summer 2013 and analyzed the extracts for 227 pesticide compounds. Analysis of water samples collected weekly for pesticides during POCIS deployment allowed for comparison of POCIS results with periodic water-sampling results. This data release provides deployment-time-normalized concentration of pesticides in POCIS from 97 of the 100 sites where deployment was successful. It also provides water concentrations estimated for 52 pesticides that have published POCIS sampling rates and the mean water concentrations calculated from weekly discrete water sampling collected at the sites during POCIS deployment. These data support analyses presented in the journal article: Complex mixtures of pesticides in Midwest U.S. streams indicated by POCIS time-integrating samplers, by Peter C. Van Metre, David A. Alvarez, Barbara J. Mahler, Lisa Nowell, Mark Sandstrom, and Patrick Moran; Environmental Pollution, (in review). Three tables are included in this Data Release. One table of column descriptors, ie. a data dictionary, of the two subsequent tables of pesticide data. Table 2 presents time normalized concentrations of pesticides collected from Passive Organic Chemical Integrating Samplers (POCIS) placed in Midwestern streams in 2013, and Table 3 presents compares mean measured water and POCIS-estimated water concentrations of pesticides the same Midwestern Streams in 2013.
