Passive Acoustic Data Collection (MD WEA-CPOD)

Offshore wind farms allow renewable energy to be generated with little or no carbon dioxide emissions and there is little visual or noise disturbance to the public. However, potential negative impacts on marine species could include habitat loss, collision or entanglement risk, and harmful effects from increased noise and electromagnetic fields. Two of the key decisions are: 1) where renewable energy installations should be sited in order to avoid or minimize ecological harm, and 2) once sites are chosen, how to minimize the negative environmental impacts those installations may cause. Making these decisions requires a year-round understanding of the species present and their ecology, particularly for protected species that are sensitive to sound, such as marine mammals. Passive acoustic monitoring devices record both ambient and marine mammal sounds from a broad range of sources and species in order to collect baseline data that can be used for informing siting, mitigation measures, assessing environmental impacts for future wind energy developments, and to facilitate marine spatial planning in the area. Marine mammals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act such as small cetacean species that are frequently present, such as bottlenose dolphins, short-beaked common dolphins, and harbor porpoises. We propose sound recording devices such as the C-POD (Cetacean PODs, tonal click detectors) that will encompass a range of frequencies so that we are able to detect vocalizations from small cetaceans (mid to high frequencies). The C-POD will capture animal occurrence based on the detection of clicks. This acoustic monitoring over a two-year period will allow us to capture interannual and seasonal variation in occurrence within the area of potential effect. We will determine the habitat use of detected marine mammal species and any temporal trends. These distributions will be analyzed in a geo-spatial database and presented as maps to allow easy interpretation and examination in relation to the Maryland Wind Energy Area.
