Otolith Racking System

Metadata Updated: May 1, 2025

North Pacific Observer Program observers collect fish otoliths as part of their standard duties. Otolith collections follow a randomized sample design detailed in the Observer Sampling Manual (https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/resource/document/north-pacific-observer-sampling-manual). The barcode numbers on the otolith sample vials serve as unique identifiers of each otolith collected, linking them to NORPAC database specimen, sample, haul, and trip information. After observer debriefing, the vials are placed into racks and transferred to the Age and Growth Research Team. Scientists then estimate fish ages using the otoliths and add the age information to the NORPAC database. The Otolith Racking System (ORS) is used to track and trace the physical locations of otolith samples.
