Oceanographic data collected during EX1710 (Canal Transit and Gulf of Mexico Mapping (Mapping)) expedition on NOAA Ship OKEANOS EXPLORER in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico from 2017-11-15 to 2017-11-22 (NCEI Accession 0170179)

Metadata Updated: December 1, 2025

This dataset contains oceanographic data collected beginning in Balboa, Panama and concluding in Key West, Florida. Operational areas included transiting through the Panama Canal, exploratory transit through the Caribbean Sea, the Seaflower Marine Protected Area in Colombian waters, and the Gulf of Mexico. Operations included the use of the ship’s high-bandwidth satellite connection for hourly data transfer, real-time ship to shore communications, and real-time video streaming of sonar screens and ship’s cameras. Data acquisition from shipboard sensors includes navigation data, meteorological data (wind, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure), and oceanographic data (thermosalinograph, sound velocity probe, bathythermograph). Operations also included the use of the ship’s Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP).
