Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid 2.0 Weekly Snow Cover and Sea Ice Extent, Version 4

Published by NASA NSIDC DAAC | National Aeronautics and Space Administration | Catalog Last Checked: September 02, 2026 at 12:19 AM | Dataset Last Updated: September 01, 2026
The main parameters for this data set are snow cover and sea ice extent, provided on the Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid 2.0 projection at a grid cell size of 25 x 25 km. Snow cover extent is based on the NOAA/NCDC Climate Data Record (CDR) of Northern Hemisphere (NH) Snow Cover Extent (SCE) by D. Robinson (2012) and regridded to the EASE-Grid. The NOAA/NCDC CDR of Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover Extent data were derived from the manual interpretation of AVHRR, GOES, and other visible-band satellite data (Helfrich et al. 2007). Sea ice extent is derived from Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data (NSIDC-0051; https://nsidc.org/data/nsidc-0051) and regridded to the EASE-Grid. This product is designed to provide a consistent weekly time series of snow cover from October 1966 through January 2023 and sea ice from October 1978 through January 2023.
