NOAA Space Environment Monitor (SEM) Science-Quality Solar X-Ray Sensor (XRS) Data from GOES 1-15

Metadata Updated: February 23, 2024

The Space Environment Monitor (SEM) Solar X-Ray Sensor (XRS) onboard the GOES satellite series provides solar X-ray irradiances for the wavelength bands of 0.5 to 4 Angstrom (short channel) and 1 to 8 Angstrom (long channel). This data is used to track solar activity including solar flares. Large solar X-ray flares can change the Earth’s ionosphere, which blocks high-frequency (HF) radio transmissions on the sunlit side of the Earth. Solar flares are also associated with Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) which can ultimately lead to geomagnetic storms. This data collection includes Reprocessed Level-2 SEM/XRS data from GOES 1-15. The data are enhanced to science quality from the original operational archive. Enhancements include corrected calibrations, updated quality flagging, full ephemeris information, high-cadence and averaged data, and summaries of flare events. The data were produced by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and archived by NOAA's Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS).
