NCPN Inventory, Herpetofauna, 11 Parks

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: March 03, 2026 at 06:35 AM | Dataset Last Updated: February 01, 2003 at 12:00 AM
This dataset comprises a herpetofauna species inventory for 11 park units within the Northern Colorado Plateau Network: BRCA, CARE, CEBR, FOBU, GOSP, PISP, TICA, ZION, ARCH, COLM, and NABR. It provides a baseline inventory of herpetofauna with the goal of documenting 90% of species present. Another goal of the project was to assess general abundance and distribution of species present, in an attempt to identify park-specific species of special concern. In 2001 and 2002, survey methods included diurnal visual encounter surveys, nocturnal spotlight surveys, and night road driving, while in 2001 researchers conducted randomly located time-and area-constrained searches. General weather conditions, location, time, observers, habitat characteristics, and other relevant information was also collected. Representative individual reptiles and amphibians were photographed and morphometric data recorded for each photographic voucher specimen captured. Road-kills and other specimens found dead were collected and deposited at the Museum of Southwestern Biology at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Appendix 1 in the 2002 final report is a master list of reptile and amphibian species in the 11 NCPN park units surveyed in 2001 and 2002.
