National Park Service Pesticide Use Proposal Data. 1997-2026
The National Park Service (NPS) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program was established to reduce risks to the public, park resources, and the environment from pests and pest-related management strategies. Since the program began in the 1980s, the NPS has developed specific policy and procedures on the review and tracking of pesticides proposed for use in the parks. The Washington Area Support Office (WASO) IPM Program is responsible for developing and implementing IPM policy, providing IPM training and technical guidance on pest issues, and tracking pesticide proposal and use. The program provides technical assistance to park staff to help them determine best pest management strategies for pests impacting NPS lands, resources, and public health, in accordance with NPS policies. IPM Program staff review, select, and track the proposed and actual use of biological control agents, genetically modified organisms, and chemical pesticides on a case-by-case basis, using the Pesticide Use Proposal System (PUPS), an intranet web-based database that is used by park, regional, and Servicewide IPM Coordinators In addition, the IPM Program reports NPS use of pesticides annually, in accordance with the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA, Title 7 USC 136r-1), DOI-DM 517 IPM and other Department of the Interior policies, state IPM laws and regulations, and specific NPS policy. This dataset contains records extracted from PUPS, covering pesticide-use proposals and requests in all workflow states (approved, conditionally approved, denied, withdrawn, expired, superseded, amended, and pending), actual-use records, annual use logs, and, where maintained, biological-control-agent and genetically modified organism records, along with related amendments and follow-ups. Fields include proposal and treatment identifiers, park/region/unit, location, target pest and host resource, treatment justification, dates, pesticide product and application details, quantities, approval status and conditions, monitoring information, and narrative comments, accompanied by lookup tables, codebooks, and a data dictionary. Compiled in response to a FOIA request, the dataset spans all NPS units represented in PUPS from the earliest retained records through the search date. Personal information has been redacted.
