National Enironmental Sensitivity Index Shoreline: GULF/ATLANTIC ESI, PACIFIC ESI, GREAT LAKES: ESIL

Published by Office of Response and Restoration | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Catalog Last Checked: August 02, 2026 at 05:28 PM | Dataset Last Updated: January 01, 2025 at 12:00 AM
The Gulf/Atlantic ESIL data set contains vector lines representing the shoreline and coastal habitats of the contiguous Atlantic and Gulf states; the Pacific ESI represents the shoreline for the contiguous Pacific coast states; the Great Lakes ESI represents the shoreline for contiguous states bordering the Great Lakes. Line segments are classified according to the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) classification system. These data are a complilation of the ESIL data from the most recent ESI atlas publications. ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. This national dataset contains only the ESIL shoreline data layer.
