Model inputs and outputs associated with nitrogen mass balance and removal efficiency in small agricultural watersheds within the Chesapeake Bay watershed

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: August 01, 2026 at 04:10 AM | Dataset Last Updated: June 24, 2026 at 12:00 AM
This data release compiles the inputs and outputs for a nitrogen mass balance model for nine small agricultural watersheds within the Chesapeake Bay nontidal watershed. Data inputs include annual nonpoint source nitrogen input, plant uptake, and output, and total discharge from 1985-2020 for each of the agricultural watersheds. Data inputs also include median groundwater age used to estimate reservoir depth. Data outputs include estimated annual total mass and concentration of nitrogen within the reservoir for each value of removal efficiency. Removal efficiency was estimated via grid search and selected by lowest root mean square error for each watershed. This data was used in support of "Estimating Mass Balance and Removal Efficiency of Nitrogen in Small Agricultural Watersheds" by Christopher A. Custer and Jeffrey G. Chanat.
