Mobile lidar scans in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, California
This dataset contains six individual mobile lidar scans, with each scan corresponding with a geophysical survey conducted in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park. Each mobile lidar survey was registered to the adjacent/overlapping surveys, and these co-registered surveys were registered as a merged entity to the USGS 3D Elevation Program point cloud, providing georeferencing to a global coordinate system. As a result, multiple individual surveys can be joined/viewed together without offset between the clouds, and these ground-based surveys can be merged/visualized with the 3DEP lidar data as well. In particular, these ground-based surveys do not fully capture the tops of the tall sequoia trees; therefore, merging with the airborne 3DEP point cloud data improves the resolution of the upper portions of the tallest trees. Please note that there may be local areas where the alignment between the mobile lidar and the 3DEP data is off by a few decimeters. Such misalignments can be improved by performing an ICP type fine registration in a program like CloudCompare.
