Mixed Methods Approach to Identifying Frequently Reported Water Scarcity Issues in the Upper Colorado River Basin between 2000-2024

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: July 12, 2026 at 05:50 PM | Dataset Last Updated: July 10, 2026 at 12:00 AM
To understand water scarcity issues in the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB) our research team accessed news articles for topics on risks associated with water scarcity conditions. These articles were gathered from the Lexis Nexis newspaper and congressional research databases. They covered the period between 2000 and 2024 and were geographically limited to the UCRB. The data were pre-processed into a tabular format and loaded into a custom application where social scientists conducted screening and assigned topic and geographic tags to the articles. Articles that fit the inclusion criteria were then fed into a Structural Topic Model (STM) along with their associated metadata. The model identified commonly occurring topics, statistical relationships between topics and their relative contributions to the content of the corpus. The model can be used by researchers or agencies to understand often difficult to identify relationships across reported themes in an area of interest. Further, the implemented workflow increases efficiency of preprocessing actions (including curation, review, and geocoding) for large corpuses of unstructured text data.
