Microtremor array data on Whidbey Island, Washington

Metadata Updated: September 12, 2025

The U.S. Geological Survey collected a grid of microtremor data points using Smartsolo 3-component seismic sensors from August 7th to August 11th, 2023. These sensors have a five hertz resonance frequency. The grid was deployed over a section of the Utsalady Point fault that runs east-west across the southern portion of the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington State. For four days, a sub-grid of about 75 sensors were deployed to record passive seismic data for a few hours to overnight and then removed. Each 75 sensor sub-grid was re-deployed near or adjacent to the previous grid (see map). In total, data from 572 microtremor stations were collected with 3 meters spacing in the north-south direction and 4 meters spacing in the east-west direction. A separate transect of six Smartsolo microtremor stations was acquired along N Saratoga Street, with about 400 m spacing between sensors. This transect was collected across fault strands of the Devil’s Mountain fault. Files are in Seismic Analysis Code (SAC) format. Microtremor data can be accessed at https://ds.iris.edu/mda/24-028/ Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
