Meteorological Data from near Old Faithful geyser, Yellowstone National Park

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: August 01, 2026 at 04:55 AM | Dataset Last Updated: March 24, 2026 at 12:00 AM
A Campbell Scientific weather station was set up to the south of Old Faithful geyser (44.45978, -110.82697) for the duration of the discharge measurement experiment, because the distribution of water erupted from Old Faithful Geyser among the outflow channels draining the water is highly dependent on wind speed and direction. The weather station was equipped with a Model 108 Temperature Probe, a CS100 Barometric Pressure Sensor, a TE525 Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge, and a Young Meteorological Instruments Model 05103-5 wind monitor. There are two files with weather station data, containing, respectively, 5-minute meteorological data, and 1-minute data on wind speed and direction. The files can be described as follows: 1) MeteorologicalData_5min.csv, with columns DateTime, RECORD, AirTemp_DegC, Pressure_mbar, Rain_mm, MeanWindSpeed_m/s, MeanWindDirection_deg, and WindDirectionStdev 2) WindData_1min.csv, with columns DateTime, RECORD, Pressure_mbar, MeanWindSpeed_deg, MeanWindDirection_deg, and WindDirectionSdev_deg.
