Mauna Kea Palila Egg Harvest 1996

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: August 01, 2026 at 05:50 AM | Dataset Last Updated: March 26, 2025 at 12:00 AM
This data release includes data and metadata documenting the removal of eggs from wild palila (Loxioides bailleui) nests to stimulate wild renesting while hatching the harvested eggs and rearing the chicks in captivity for later release to the wild. Some eggs were not harvested and were monitored in the wild for hatching and resulting progeny. The data provides details related to the harvest of the eggs (nest identification, location, date of harvest), the response of females to egg harvesting (date and location of renesting, and number and fertility of eggs laid in harvested nests, renests, and captivity), and chick survival in wild renests and in captivity. Not all eggs were collected for captive rearing but egg fate (fertility, dates, chicks, fledglings, etc.) were monitored in the wild.
