| description | This dataset contains forest monitoring data collected from 57 permanent 20x20 meter plots within the Fort Clatsop Unit of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (LEWI), Oregon. Plots were surveyed approximately every five years beginning in 2012 to evaluate the effectiveness of LEWI's forest restoration treatments designed to promote late-successional forest characteristics in acquired industrial timber stands. Ten plots were designated as untreated controls, while the remaining 47 plots received restoration treatments including variable density thinning, snag creation, and native species planting. These treatments were implemented to increase forest structural complexity, improve ecosystem function, and accelerate the development of old-growth characteristics in historically managed forest stands. Data collected at the time of each visit serves as a method to evaluate changes in forest structure over time and determine the effectiveness of LEWI's treatments in promoting the development of late-successional characteristics. Data collected include measurements of forest structure, such as overstory density, tree species and DBH, understory vegetation composition and diversity, coarse woody debris and standing dead wood habitat, and woody tree recruitment. |
