Juvenile rearing habitat for Chinook salmon in the South Santiam River, Oregon
This data release contains rasters of modeled juvenile rearing habitat for spring Chinook salmon in the South Santiam River, extending from Foster Dam downstream to the confluence with the North Santiam River for a range of streamflows. Usable habitat area for juvenile rearing spring Chinook salmon was modeled for two size classes (fry and parr) by pairing outputs from two-dimensional hydraulic models (Bartelt and White, 2026) with in-basin observations of juvenile Chinook salmon habitat preferences (Hansen and others, 2023). The resulting rasters of juvenile rearing habitat for the South Santiam River are organized into four subreaches (described in enclosed README file). For each reach, rasters of juvenile rearing habitat are included for a range of streamflows that range from typical low summer flows to approximately the median annual high flow for each reach. Users are encouraged to read White and others (2026), Hansen and others (2023), and the enclosed README file for descriptions of model development, habitat preference criteria selection, and limitations.
