Island of Hawai'i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost change-points, 2019-2021
The 'ōpe‘ape‘a, also known as the Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus semotus; Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), is a solitary, insectivorous, and foliage-roosting endemic species. We investigated day-roost lability and fidelity, nocturnal activity patterns at the roost, and long-term use of roosts by 'ōpe‘ape‘a.
The full data release consists of six tabular datasets: (1) Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost detection records, 2018-2021, (2) Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost switch metrics, 2018-2021, (3) Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost activity metrics, 2018-2021, (4) Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost long-term fidelity, 2019-2022, (5) Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost visual checks, 2019-2022, and (6) Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost change-points, 2019-2021.
Here the sixth dataset is described, "Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost change-points, 2019-2021". The dataset consists of a time-series of telemetry detections identifying movement by radio-tagged individuals away ("depart") and back ("return") to the day roost. The determination of specific depart/return events was accomplished with change-point analysis and visual review of the full time-series of telemetry detections. The change-point detections and ancillary data from visual sightings and thermal videography provided information on nocturnal activity patterns such as initial emergence from the day roost, frequency of "flight bouts" and proportion of the night spent at the day roost (these metrics are included in the Entity and Attribute table of the child item "Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost activity metrics, 2018-2021" as the fields "emergence", "departures" and "prop_night_roost". Determination of bat occupancy from the telemetry data also informed the assessment of day-roost use over multiple days, roost switching and the calculation of roost lability and fidelity, as tabulated in the child item "Island of Hawai‘i, 'ōpe‘ape‘a day-roost switch metrics, 2018-2021".
