Iowa Child Abuse Occurrences by Year, County and Type of Abuse, 2005-2023

Published by Child Protective Services | State of Iowa | Catalog Last Checked: August 01, 2026 at 06:12 AM | Dataset Last Updated: August 26, 2025 at 08:10 PM
This dataset summarizes occurrences of abuse by type identified during child welfare assessments conducted by DHS with "founded" or "confirmed" findings in calendar years 2005 through 2023. Founded means abuse occurred and resulted in perpetrator placement on the child abuse registry. Confirmed means abuse occurred, but it was minor, isolated and not likely to reoccur, and perpetrator was not placed on the central abuse registry. Data is grouped by calendar year, county and type of abuse. For each child included in the assessment, up to 10 types of abuse may be indicated. Each child may be confirmed of multiple types of abuse on a single assessment, and may have multiple assessments. The county is determined according to the child's county of residence at time of the assessment. A year, county and abuse type is only provided if there were a reported occurrence. There were a small number of assessments without county information in 2004. Beginning July 1, 2009 there was a statute change related to registered sex offenders that changed how information was reported.
