Investigation of Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) Burrowing Behavior

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: May 05, 2026 at 09:25 PM | Dataset Last Updated: July 25, 2025 at 12:00 AM
This study used artificial burrowing chambers to investigate the effects of groundwater drainage rates and soil type on burrow initiation and morphology of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). The relationship between caloric density of crayfish and burrowing was also examined. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the effect of ground water drainage rates on burrowing, (2) determine the effect of soil composition on burrowing, and (3) test for differences in burrowing behaviors between males and females. These datasets include data collected from groundwater drainage rate trials and soil composition trials.
