Influenza, COVID-19, and RSV Intensive Care Unit Admissions
Since 2010, influenza cases with intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization have been reportable in Illinois. As of May 2024, ICU hospitalizations associated with RSV and COVID-19 have also become reportable conditions. All hospitals in Illinois are required to report demographic, clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological information for patients admitted to the ICU were test positive for influenza, RSV, or SARS-CoV-2.
This dataset includes aggregated weekly ICU admissions for Chicago residents who meet the established reporting criteria. Influenza data begins with the 2015-2016 season (starting in October 2015), while data for RSV and COVID-19 begin in May 2024, aligning with the start of mandatory reporting for those diseases. All data are summarized weekly and categorized by disease, age group, and race/ethnicity. Reported metrics include the weekly count and percentage of cases by demographic groups, as well as cumulative totals, cumulative percentages and cumulative incidence rates per 100,000 for the season to date. Cumulative rates are calculated using the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 1-year population estimates. Because reporting requirements for RSV and COVID-19 began in May 2024, data for 2023-2024 season are incomplete, and cumulative rates for that season were not calculated. Most seasons span 52 weeks and do not include an epidemiologic week 53; however, seasons with 53 weeks occasionally occur. A week 53 value for rate_cumulative is provided for all seasons to allow for comparisons of incidence rates by season without breaks in visualization charts. For seasons without a week 53, the rate_cumulative value is calculated as the average of the values from week 52 and week 1.
