The "Gulf of Maine Atlantic Cod Industry-Based Survey" was a collaboration of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and the fishing industry, with support from NOAA Fisheries. The goal of the survey was to define the broad scale distribution of Atlantic cod aggregations in the Gulf of Maine in space and time, by age and size composition. Specific objectives were to use the resultant data to: 1) compliment the NEFSC bottom trawl surveys and 2) evaluate the Gulf of Maine rolling closure areas that existed at the time. Intensive sampling in Gulf of Maine waters was accomplished using four commercial trawlers equipped with a trawl specifically designed for this program. Sampling protocols were adapted from the NEFSC standardized bottom trawl surveys.
