Immediate impacts of tropical storms on the avian breeding community at Whiskey Island, Louisiana from 2015-2020
We monitored breeding birds at Whiskey Island, Louisiana between March through July from 2015 to 2020. We surveyed all available habitat by foot, using high-powered spotting scopes and binoculars to search for and identify nesting birds. We documented species, abundance, habitat, location, and breeding behavior for each bird that we observed to be breeding. We modeled the counts of breeding bird species from before and after four storms that included Tropical Storm Bill (2015), Tropical Storm Cindy (2017), Hurricane Barry (2019), and Tropical Storm Cristobal (2020) to determine the immediate impacts severe storms have on the abundance of breeding birds.
